Still, anyone who knows the Hitchcock film might have made the same guesses that I did when I first heard the news. And we would have been right in the obvious ways, but hard put to imagine how unlovable the Netflix version would be, and how it would handle, or, rather, mishandle the essential element of feminism that was implicit in the original. He had butted heads with the producer, David O. All the same, audiences loved it for its gothic romance in which an unnamed young woman is swept off her feet by an older and extremely wealthy widower, then grows obsessed with his late wife, the Rebecca of the title, whose memory haunts her husband and blights their new marriage. Happy New Year Poppies! Are you anxiously excited for a new year to begin? Or are you, like me, living in a new normal of weird slow motion? Im not sure if its the lack of travel, or the pandemic, or maybe its moving out into the middle of a bean field – but the future seems a bit unreal to me. Like I cant even fathom that will actually arrive. Anyone else feel this way? In any case, is here, and with it might come thoughts on what we want to change, who we want to become, etc etc. But in my soft quietness, Im feeling extra nostalgic for what has been, in this past year, but also in my life. A lot of these monthly bulletins are about how to move forward, tackling new creative endeavors , moving past creative obstacles , and dreaming of projects. Perfect for the NEW year right? Im generally on the move, and if thats you today, those posts might be helpful. But this year Im starting off with reverence. And, with a love letter. Its addressed to the one I spend copious amounts of time thinking about. The one who drives me to tears – in anger and joy. The one who makes me feel like anything is possible, and simultaneously crushes me in anguish. Its a feeling so to name it falls short. I will call it a Tiny Fire. Ive had a lifelong and sometimes complicated relationship with my tiny fire. By now, I know the importance of falling in love with it again and again and again. This is a letter to myself in a way. Im not a mystical or spiritual person who sees creativity as an external entity, though many do, and thats great. In any case, let this serve as an open template should you choose to write your own love letter – maybe to a passion, a feeling, or an intangible impulse. It felt silly to write this, but also cathartic and emotional – the same feelings I have when Im my most creative self, so Im trusting that and bypassing the ego part of my brain that feels too vulnerable to share this. If one person reads this and falls in love again with their creative self, then it was worth it. And just in case this is a little too sappy for you and it seems a waste of time to communicate with the creative part of yourself, let me explain how cultivating this relationship can be helpful. When you fall in love with your creative self, the finished product of your craft doesnt hold as much weight. There is room for change and growth in the finished product, but the impulse and drive might feel very much the same. This is like If its coming from that pure place, itll always be you, and then it will be recognizable because its you – not because it looks the same again and again. Ive experienced so much frustration, trapped in what others thought my style was or is, but the more I love my process, the less I care about fitting everything into one neat box. There will be pain and fights and laundry and mundane days. In the same way, falling in love with our creative selves helps us accept that we will never arrive. Its alluring to assume once we land that project or client that the rest of our creative path will just fall into place and well never have to work again but just like anything else – there will be hard days where you feel you cant keep up, or youre bored, or stuck. Allowing for this as part of the process makes getting through the struggles much easier. Falling in love with our creative self means trusting our intuition. Something VERY important if you want to make work that you love and feel connected to.
